Second Brain Claude Code: 1 Folder, No Obsidian, No Plugins

A second brain for Claude Code is 1 folder your AI reads before it answers you. No Obsidian. No plugins. The blank folder I built live in the video is free right here.

I've only ever had 1 brain. It's 1 folder on my computer.

That folder holds 36,631 files and 4,570 folders. 1 agent runs it out of Claude Code. I named him Fred.

If you'd rather your AI ask you the questions and fill the folder in, that's the brain interview. This post is the folder itself.

I build the second brain live from an empty folder. Then I hand my real folder to a fresh AI after 13 days with no check up. Whatever broke stayed in.

What is a second brain, really?

Somebody asked that on Obsidian's own Reddit. The thread pulled 415 upvotes and 302 comments.

I went through them so you don't have to.

1 commenter called "second brain" a buzzword. I agree. There's a lot of YouTube gurus pushing courses to sell you a second brain.

Another 1 said it better than I can.

it's not a second brain, it's a tool the one brain you have uses

So here's my take. A second brain is a folder your AI reads before it answers you.

Your AI has a desk. The desk has a size. The folder is the filing cabinet. 1 start file tells Claude which drawer to open. I wrote more on what goes in that CLAUDE.md file.

Do you need Obsidian for a Claude Code second brain?

No.

Every Obsidian post shows the same picture. A graph full of dots.

Somebody in the same thread said what I was thinking. If most of your vault is that cloud of dots, you have "a folder with extra steps."

Claude doesn't need a graph full of dots. Claude needs to know which drawer to open. That part starts 51 seconds into the video.

No Obsidian. No plugins. Just files n' folders.

How do you build a second brain in Claude Code?

I opened Claude Code in a brand new empty folder. Not inside my own folder. On the desktop, right next to it.

Then I typed 1 prompt and told Fred to build it. Every file gets 1 line at the top that says what goes in it. Nothing gets filled in. Nothing gets made up.

Fred read the plan back to me before he built anything. I said yes. You watch the build 6 minutes 16 seconds in.

Second brain Claude Code folder: brain with CLAUDE.md, CONTEXT.md, _decisions.md, START-HERE.md, _me, ideas, _archive, my-business with clients, work and done, and _the-move with move-map.md and move-log.md

What goes inside the brain folder?

7 files. 9 folders. Every folder starts empty.

CLAUDE.md is the start file. It only points to where things live. It holds nothing.

CONTEXT.md says what's true right now and what happens next.

_decisions.md gets 1 line per decision. Dated. Newest on top. You make a call inside a chat. You close the chat. The call is gone. This file is where it lives instead.

_me is what never changes about you. Your voice. Your rules. The calls you always make yourself.

ideas gets 1 file per idea you haven't run yet. _archive is for what's over. Nothing in it ever gets deleted.

my-business gets its own CONTEXT.md. Inside it sit clients, work and done.

Say you run a small web design agency. Every client gets 1 card in clients. A site being built sits in work. A site that launched moves to done. The folder is the status. Nobody keeps a second list.

START-HERE.md is for you, not your AI. It tells you what to fill in first.

_the-move holds a move map and a move log. That's for bringing your old files in later, once the structure is right.

The rule under all of it is 1 fact, 1 home. Write the same fact in 2 places and 1 day the 2 copies disagree. The full structure with every piece explained is in AI folder structure.

The same brain folder Fred built in the video. 7 files and 9 folders. Every file says what goes in it. It went through the Mac check before I gave it away.

Does a second brain rot?

1 last comment in that thread said this.

Second brains don't rot.

So I tested it on mine.

I run my 4R audit every Sunday. I skipped last weekend. So my folder had gone 13 days without a check up.

The 4R audit is 4 steps. Read the folder. Run a real job through it with a fresh AI. Plant old mistakes to see if my rules still catch them. Then report every finding.

Here's the part I didn't plan. The real job the fresh AI got was writing a FilesNFolders blog post for "second brain claude code." This post.

Second brain Claude Code 4R audit after 13 days: 233 of 234 old planted mistakes still caught, 13 days did not rot the machine, it rotted the words

233 of 234 old planted mistakes still got caught. 133 of 133 routes on my map still went somewhere real.

13 days didn't rot the machine. It rotted the words.

3 status files said things that stopped being true. 2 new guards had holes. Every finding stayed on screen. The report starts 31 minutes 53 seconds in.

Then Fred fixed the list in order. I wrote up how the 4R audit checks a folder if you want every step.

How do you keep a second brain from rotting?

Yes, a second brain you leave alone will rot. Every system does.

The difference is you can check this 1. It's 1 folder.

It's no different than maintaining your vehicle. Everybody knows a Toyota Camry lasts forever. But you do have to do the maintenance.

Take care of your second brain and your second brain takes care of you. The brain I built in the video goes on the same schedule as mine. Every Sunday.

My 4R auditor is free too. And if your old files are already a mess, here's how I fixed 43 side copies with 4 moves.

The folder method is Jake Van Clief's and David McDermott's Interpretable Context Methodology, ICM. I just run it every day. Fred runs on Claude Code. Anthropic's own guide to CLAUDE.md memory files covers the file your AI reads first. The quotes up top come from r/ObsidianMD.
